Top 5 Laptops for College Students: ₹30K to ₹100K

8 years ago, I was in a same situation like you. I couldn't understand which laptop I want, should I want an Ultrabook, do I want a Macbook, should I take a gaming laptop or should I take a normal laptop. Now at that time, my budget was Rs 30,000 now I come from a middle class family, so I didn't have money. After stretching, I had Rs 30,000 and I had to go to college. I had to do computer science engineering in 1st year I had to learn lot of things. I didn't even knew which laptop is good for machine learning or which graphic card is required. Which things are there - I was clueless. But whatever was possible at that point of time, I bought that laptop. And that laptop was with me for 4 years. Finally, before ending college I was able to upgrade to Macbook M1 at that time, it was newly launched in 2020. So, I was able to get that. I had earned my own money. By learning, by making youtube videos, by teaching people. And I got my first Macbook at that time. Then I upgraded Macbook to M3 Pro last year, the current laptop which I use daily for multiple different tasks. So in today's video, we're going to discuss which things should you focus on when you're buying your first laptop. How many segments of laptops are there, which components does it consist of, what are they important for, how much RAM is required, how much SSD is required & if you've to use that laptop for 4-5 years in college then what should be the minimum specifications in different budget segments. We'll be discussing the budget from Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,00,000 and we'll discuss about everything. MacOS, Windows, Linux - what should we use. I've used all of them. How much important is graphic card, how much important SSD is what does UHK written behind processes mean. So that you can make a very good decision. When I was getting my laptop, I had no idea and I even took a wrong decision at that time. But we can't do anything. It turned out well at the end of the day but for you to not make a wrong decision that's why do watch this video until the end. Hi guys, I'm Nishant Chahar! Let's start the video. So firstly, you've to understand the options available in market. So basically, there're 3 types of options in the market. One is Business laptops, second is Macbooks & third is Gaming laptops. Now let's understand one by one the difference between them. And then we'll jump to the components that you should take care of. And we'll discuss which one would be best for beginners, if you're on a tight budget or if you've decent money to spend on a laptop. Now the budget friendly segment is thin & light weight laptops. Among Thin & Light weigh, I'm not talking about ultra thin. The ultra thin laptops are pretty expensive. But thin & light weight means they're not gaming laptops & they're windows devices. Now there're 2 categories in thin and light as well. One is Ultrabooks, others are business laptops. Whichever think-pads that you see people work on in reels which you get in offices. Those are business laptops, those are also small and thin but they're pretty expensive. On the other hand, the other ones that are there are Ultrabooks. Many companies make their ultrabooks. ASUS makes it, Acer makes it, even Dell makes it. So their entry level pricing is around Rs 30k - Rs 35k - Rs 40k. And their weight ranges from 1.5 kg - 2 kg. The processor in these laptops are mostly of Intel U series. Now the processors of Intel U series are perfect for your daily tasks if you've to do LeetCode questions, if you've to learn web development, android development you can run most of the things on this laptop. If you want a better processor then we've business laptops around the budget of Rs 60,000. The processor which they have is a bit better. But if you're spending Rs 60,000, you get more options. You can get a Macbook or you can even get a gaming laptop. So that's why coming to the next thing. Our next option is of Gaming Laptops. All these processors are of high performance, along with it there're a dedicated GPU in gaming laptops which is able to run your games properly & it can even run many of the machine learning models as well. Now, don't just tell your parents that - Buy me a gaming laptop. I've to run machine learning models. Right! Show your parents this video together. Now the downside to these gaming laptops is that they're very heavy their average weight is 2.3-2.4 kgs plus, their power-brick is also heavy. So you'll be taking a weight of total 3 kg to college daily. I'm telling you, my laptop which I bought initially was alsoa round 2-2.5 kg. It was a whole lot of work taking it daily. That's why if you have to build body in college then this is a very good way to build the body and to remain fit. But in return to this downside, you get lot of things. You can do editing in this laptop you can do machine learning, gaming - everything in this laptop very easily and it won't get hot easily. You won't even get the feel of getting hang. But if you're really serious about coding that you don't want to do gaming, right! If you want to do video editing, you can do that - you can opt for Macbook as well. They're ultra thin, ultra light. It comes within 1.3 kg, even the power-brick is very light. You can take it easily anywhere. If you put it in your bad daily, you won't even feel. Macbook comes in that case. So there're various options of operating systems in Linux that give a feel of Macbook. So I had put that in my Dell Laptop with which I get a feeling of Macbook. But still, Macbook is on a separate level. But it becomes a bit more expensive, if your budget is Rs 30,000 - Rs 40,000 then it is tough to stretch until Rs 60,000 and even in Rs 60,000, you'll get M1. Which is already 4 years old and when you'll be graduating from college then it would be 8 years old. So it is a bit tough but still, it would be better than a 4 year old or 2 year old gaming PC because the software updates, the configuration - everything is a bit better. So Macbook is still a better option than getting a 2 year old gaming laptop. And then it is far more better. Now further, let's discuss in detail that which components should you pay attention to before buying a laptop. Now for coding, Macbook is best because you get lot of dev support. You'll see that most of the companies use Macbooks. So online support for Mac, for anything - if you've to run a software and you can't do it for example, you're using new version of Node.js but you're getting error for some reason you can't understand why it is in our Mac, it is running in my friend's. So you'll find solutions to these problems very easily online. Now if your budget stretches until Rs 1,00,000 or Rs 90,000 then, you can also get Macbook M4 Recently I've - it is very crazy. It'll run very good until 4-6 years. And along with it, the best part is Apple has reduced its prices a bit. Earlier, the entry level Macbooks were around Rs 1.1 lakh, where the initial RAM is of 16 GB and many things but M4 is a very good option, if you've a budget of Rs 80,000 - Rs 90,000 because after implementing your card discount, student discount - you can get it for Rs 85,000 - Rs 90,000 if you're stretching your budget until this, not by troubling parents but you actually have this budget then this can be a very good laptop for you. On the other hand, M3 & M2 will be more cheaper you'll get M2 up around Rs 70,000 & during sale, back to school offers would start at that time, you'll also get M1. I know not everyone has this budget even I didn't have it, that's why I bought a windows laptop & I'll talk about it later. So that is also a very good option, if you want to code. You get lot of support for 'ubuntu' & 'Linux tool online. You get it very easily, you can use many open source softwares. There're so many endless options even for Linux. Now let's quickly talk about some specifications that which CPU, how much RAM, SSD or which Hard disk should you take, minimum how much hard disk, RAM what is the meaning of HKU in the processors, which will be correct for you. Let's understand in detail, then I've some recommendations that you can definitely check out. Now first is the processor, which will basically be the CPU of your laptop. You majorly get to see 4 series in Windows. In which the entry level is called - U series. Now let me tell you 2 names intel - i5-1235U or Ryzen 5 5500U. Here 'U' is coming in both. These are the variants of the CPU that you should take minimum. In i3 it is very tough to like run it for next 4 years because when you're taking i3, it is already 1-2 years old. It's a bit tough to run everything on it I myself had i3 and I'm telling you, I've struggled a lot on that. And mine was also 'U' processor so, often I couldn't run many things. Often it was very slow I would get very frustrated many times, honestly. So, you should take i5 minimum for sure or you can take Ryzen, if i5 isn't in your budget. Processors of AMD are also very got. Now 'U' majorly means - Ultra Low Processors. It doesn't have power, it's just that to save the battery battery is preferred more, rather than power. If we'll take more power, then the battery has to be enlarged and as soon as the battery is enlarged, the laptop will be heavy. The ultra thin laptops or thin laptops has chips of mostly 'U' series. Now lot of beginners take i3 in the budget of Rs 30,000, even I did the same mistake. You shouldn't make this mistake. If i5 isn't in your budget, for for Ryezen 5. It's going to give you similar results. There is not going to be any problem. So never buy processor below 5 series for coding. It is very tough to do everything on it later. Also, I've already found a laptop in this budget for you in which you get Ryzen 5 processor and I'll tell you about he budget of Rs 30,000, later on. You can definitely check out that as well. Next series is P-series. Now P means performance, so it is performance optimized it is very good for performance. Your Microsoft office, your daily task - run on it easily. Then next series is H series. H series is High performance series. You mostly get in the gaming laptops. Now you can easily run gaming, editing, dev work on it and you don't face much problem in this processor. So if you want to learn things like After effect, Premier Pro, Blender then, HX processor is going to help you out more. Basic tasks will run similarly in H & HX but the high intensity tasks perform much better. Now processors isn't the only important factor. RAM is also an important factor with it, so next thing is that which RAM should you take. Now just remember one thing, whenever you buy a laptop, check how many slots of RAM is available. If there is one more slot then you can upgrade your RAM later if you're getting a windows laptop. Mac doesn't have all these options. But if you're buying windows or Linux laptop, then you've an option to upgrade your RAM. But lot of laptops, lot of manufacturing companies don't have the option, they don't have removeable RAM or it just has one slot. So do check it out, whenever you're buying a laptop. If it actually has 2 slots or not & the only benefit of 2 slots is that if you're getting an 8 GB RAM then you can convert it into 16 GB by adding one more RAM of 8 GB in other slot. Second thing to get checked is that the 8 GB RAM they're talking about currently, for example, is it 4+4 or is it 8. If it is 4+4, then it is already using two slots. That means, when you want to upgrade then you can just upgrade till 12 because the slot of one RAM is mostly fixed in most of the laptops. If not, then you'll have to upgrade them both separately. So it takes more money, that's why it is better if you have a laptop which has RAM in one slot only. And even when you work, in 4+4 RAM the way of usage is a bit complex. That's why when one RAM gets full, then it tries to transfer things to other RAM so it feels slow, even after you've an 8 GB. Now take 8 GB minimum, don't buy 4 GB or when you buy 4 GB then upgrade it there itself. Secondly, if you've the budget to go for 16 GB, go for it because for the next 4 years it's going to help you out. If you don't have the budget right now, you can upgrade after 2 years. That's also totally fine. But do remember the stance about two slots. Now next thing to look for after RAM is storage that whether you want to buy SSD or HDD, which one to take in SSD, if you're buying one. So let's discuss about it. Now buy laptops with Nvme SSDs & not the ones with SATA Nvme is a bit faster, so this if the first option. Secondly, don't buy laptops with HDD atleast you should have some SSD. It helps you run the software fast, it helps you like, make you feel that, laptop is very fast. Otherwise the other option is, get a laptop with hard drive. Then later get the hard drive removed from it & like, convert it into a- like, have SSD added externally. Have an Nvme SSD added, if you want you have 512 GB added or 1 TB the benefit is that your laptop will be very fast plus you'll have an extra external HDD that you can use anywhere. You get its case in Rs 100 - Rs 200 and you can use it like your external hard drive. Now even in Nvme, there's a division of Gen-3 & Gen-4 The speed of Gen-4 is much better so, if you've the budget go for Gen-4. Try that in any technology part whatever is the latest, if you can upgrade by giving Rs 1000 - Rs 2000 more then try to do that because you'll taking laptop for minimum next 4 years. It's not that you'll upgrade again, next year. Now next comes the GPU. There're 2 types of GPU in the laptop. One is dedicated, other is integrated. Many laptops have Integrated one, as I told you that you've a fixed RAM. Now the reason for that RAM to be fixed is that because if it has 4 GB RAM then, 2 GB is dedicated for GPU and 2 GB is for your normal tasks. Now for this reason, you cannot have that RAM removed. You've to check the same if there's dedicated GPU or integrated GPU. If you just want to code, you don't want to do gaming, video editing, high rendering tasks then it's fine you can just go for an integrated GPU. All your things will run on it. Intel's iRIS, AMD's Ryzen. Ryzen's Radeon processors has integrated graphics. And intle has laucnhed a new one, named iRIS. Now you'll laptops with integrated GPU for around Rs 45,000. If you want dedicated GPU, then you'll get them around Rs 50k-Rs 55k. If you actually just want to code, you don't want to explore much, then you can work on even with ones of Rs 30k if you're going for a Ryzen 5 or i5, then you can work on that too, if you're just doing coding but if you're doing high end tasks, you want to explore after going to college, I want to create content I want to learn video editing, I want to do everything else which I don't even know. I want to learn blender I want to learn 3D rendering, then graphic card is going to be very important for you. And the problem is that you cannot add graphic card externally in your laptops. You'll have to get a laptop in which dedicated graphic card is already added. You cannot have it added later. This is not like a RAM or a SSD that you can add externally later on. If your laptop has a GPU, it has a GPU. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Now you know, if you want to do gaming, editing along with coding, then you've RTX 40 series they start in laptop worth around Rs 70,000( Rs 65k - Rs 70k). Now these are average prices. These prices often get reduced a lot in sales. Now RTX 40 series is so much better from 3050 series So you can definitely consider it above them. Now RTX 40 series like, 4050, 4060 - you get DLSS 3 this is AI powered processor, even if your frame rates drop then AI generates it & gives you better output if you're gonna play games. On the other hand, in 3050 DLSS 2 is there that's why it is a bit worse than this. Not worse but worse than this one. It is one generation older, as I told you, in tech try to buy latest generation there's a lot of benefit. And if this 40 series is going out of your budget, then just wait to buy a laptop. When 50 series would be launched, then the prices of 40 series would reduce. Then you can buy the 40 series, now you don't just have to look at the name of GPU but also its TGP - Total Graphics Power Now it tells you that how much power your graphic card is actually taking up. Now for example, the GPU 3050 is only taking power of 40 W then it would perform a bit low on the other hand, if there's a 3050 which is taking power of 80W but here you'll see that the name of both the GPU's are same the performance depends on the power of the TGP that they have it would depend on the power that they have, then this is also a very important thing to be checked. So the bottom line is just that, higher the TGP, better would be your graphics performance and better would be your game play, editing - whatever you want to do. So you don't just have to look at the name of the GPU, you also have to check its TGP as well. Now if you just actually want to code & not gaming, you can do editing though but if you don't want to do gaming at all, then you can get a good Macbook withon Rs 70,000 I told you that you'll get M2 & sometimes you even get M3 in discount. M3 Air - so you can also buy that as well. And if you want to buy laptop very cheaply then second option which you have is - you have an option of Mac mini You can buy Mac mini, later on when you've the budget to buy Macbook, then you can get a laptop very cheaply. When you'll earn your own money, in college by doing different things, by freelancing by making projects, by going for hackathons, by doing internships then you can buy these things as well. Now let's quickly come to the budget wise consideration. So, I've made an entire list budget\t wise, I'll share it with you. If you like any of the laptops, you can buy it. You can buy from the link below, if not then you can check in the showroom you can buy from there as well. This is - Acer Aspire Lite. Here you get AMD Ryzen 5 Hexa Core it is showming for smotly Rs 36,000 but if you look at the price graph here, then it's price graph has increased now. But you often get it within minimum Rs 30,000. This is an extension which you can add, by which you can know what the minimum price was, when can you buy it also tells that you'll get similar product on Amazon for Rs 32,000.

Now if you look in here, there's an 8 GB RAM, you get 512 GB SSD and windows 11 but in this you'll not get any graphic card externally but it's very light. It comes for around 1.59 kg. Now you'll see that, it also has a 16 GB RAM version. You're getting both in the same price. I don't know how but you can get the 16GB RAM version for around Rs 36,000 but you can expand RAM later on as well, there is no issues. Rest of the features in it are as it is same. You get rest of the things in it, if you look at its specifications then its screen size is of 15 GB, you also get AMD Radeon integrated graphic card. Right! And you get all the ports, you get full HD screen so you can easily watch youtube as well. There won't be any problem in it. Since it's lightweight then - 1.6 kg is very light weight comparatively. So you can easily carry it daily. Rest there's one more thing to look at it is - whether Keyboard is back lit or not. So that if you're working at night, then it is easy. It's keyboard is also back lit that is also a very good thing. Next up our budget is Rs 50k - Rs 60k. I think this is a very good option for the range of Rs 30k - Rs 40k similarly, you can also check for Asus.
